Gardener Comments

We have clay soil and plenty of weeds to deal with as well as deer and rabbits. I used the suggested way of creating a garden out of a piece of weedy ground, which is to cover it with cardboard and then wood mulch to give the plants a fighting chance against the surrounding weeds. This method worked great for the most part. I still had to pull weeds, but they came out more easily.
I also added more native plants to each of my native gardens this year because I loved what I already had blooming last summer. They were even “”happier”” this summer!
I plan to continue adding a few plants each year to my gardens and expanding them, as I have enjoyed them SO much. The birds, bees, and butterflies have too!

Wildlife Observed

I have had various kinds of bees and butterflies as well as many hummingbirds visiting my native gardens and I love that. Unfortunately, even though I tried to plant deer and rabbit resistant plants, they still attracted some deer and rabbits who ate some of them off just before they bloomed. I do have an organic spray that I may have to use next summer.
