I found sod removal challenging. What I learned about sheet mulching helped me to prepare well ahead of time for future expansion of my flower garden. I found the native plants to be very desirable to deer and rabbits! So protecting them until they became established was key!
I think once you start, you aren’t likely to stop! Also, just the more variety, the better. I think it’s important to mimic the prairie in planting densely, so the plants can support each other and stand upright. Every fall, I now begin to prepare more area for planting in the spring. I’ve joined a lot of pollinator and gardening groups online and gained so much knowledge. This project has really affected me so much! After participating, I decided to become a master gardener so I can help more people create pollinator habitat. My goal is to eventually have no grass and nothing but native flowers!
Wildlife Observed
I have so many different types of insects I’ve never even seen before, a huge variety of bees, milkweed bugs and lots of butterflies. I have many monarchs and caterpillars, ladybugs and various types of finches and songbirds that come for seed. Of course a lot of rabbits and deer as well.
