Gardener Comments

0.15 acre south facing hill in backyard. Removed invasives. Seeded with 80 types of native species beneath 4′ x 8′ burlap sheets scattered throughout. Plus 4 species planted bare root. Of 84 species attempted, 30-40 survived first year. Similar number of native species already sparsely present before project. Allowed and encouraged both to spread in subsequent years and used native seed swap to obtain additional. At year 5, now at100 native plant species. Expecting some will die out. Still plenty of areas throughout into which we would like the best suited higher quality natives to spread. Project is now contributing native seed to adjacent city park that is removing invasives. Also still pulling out our own invasives that pop up on occasion.
