My project was adding a tree and wildflowers to an existing native garden planted in 2021. The first year I sprayed deer and rabbit repellent but learned through experience following the winter to cage many wildflowers and the lowbush blueberry bushes. My goal was to have adequate ground cover to keep the weeds down and a beautiful garden to enjoy. The garden is becoming beautiful, the weeds continue to thrive, and I spend a portion of many days weeding. The wild geraniums, cardinal flowers, asters, and false lilies-of-the-valley continue to spread every year through the sedges and ferns. My project plantings were woodland sunflowers, rough blazing star, rue anemone, starry Solomon’s seal, sweet Joe-Pye weed, Jacob’s ladder, wood anemone, and a white pine. I knew little about Minnesota native plants when I started. Now, I’m a native plants enthusiast.
