I got a package of 50 plants from Prairie Moon, and used the template that came with the plants. I planted pretty close together, because my plot was smaller than the template. I plan to move the crowded plants as they propagate, but this year they are close, but ok. Sometimes I am tying up plants that spread out and get tangled with others. I am planting on a boulevard, and my challenge was to arrange the plants by height, so they did not shade out or cover up shorter plants. Also, which direction the bed should face, street or sidewalk? So far, so good. I only lost a few plants over the winter, still cannot name most of them, but it helped to have tags from the nursery. It is stupendously beautiful, and changes every day. I am smitten.
I used cedar chips as mulch last year, and doing well with weeds this year.
Wildlife Observed
Lots of bees and flying insects. Birds eating seeds in the winter.
