Well-draining soil. Use 3″ of mulch if possible. Be open to getting plants outside the template list- talk to the nursery about it. Think about spacing- do you want a tight planting that looks natural and a bit more chaotic, or do you want space between plants that looks a bit more formal (suggested spacings).
If you plant things closer together, you get less weed pressure and have less need for ongoing mulch applications. Be sure to know how aggressive any of the plants you plant are- woodland strawberry and bee balm have absolutely taken over certain areas.
