Island in an urban lawn. Soil has high clay content. Weed pressure minimal. Removing sod is WORK. Then eliminating the last vestiges of quack grass types requires persistence. Planting autumnal bare root plants is easy, but the results are somewhat erratic, since not everything will grow. Thus following the guidelines for spacing will leave some gaps next year when these plants (hopefully) start to grow.
The urban critters – in my case, deer and rabbits – found this new buffet very appetizing. It’s been a struggle minimizing the damage. Too late I realized that a cloche [homemade – a bottom-removed milk jug] over each sprout works well. It’s now July and I still have some plants enclosed.
After removing most of the overwintered grass sprouts, I mulched. I think that may have been later than it should have been. Now mulched, it looks good, and weeds are easy to spot and easy to remove.
